Yenagoa, Jan. 10, 2017 (NAN) Mr Wobin Gora, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in Bayelsa said the command recorded impressive reduction in fatal road crashes in 2016.
Gora told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Yenagoa, that the record was based on its comparison to that of 2015.
According to the Commander, out of 47 road crashes recorded in 2016, ten lives were lost, seven were fatal crashes, 29 serious crashes and one minor.
“In 2015, the corps recorded 50 accidents which claimed 26 person’s lives, so, we have less accidents rate when comparing the two years, 2016 and 2015.
“I will attribute the reduction in accidents to the aggressive patrols and public enlightenment adopted by the FRSC personnel in the state.
“8, 014 traffic offenders were apprehended, arrested and booked for contravention in 2016, while only 4, 875 persons were arrested in 2015.
“The offenders, who were nabbed, violated different traffic rules and regulations and most of the offences were prevalent, which include phone calls while driving, bad tyre, failure to use seat belt, fake drivers’ licence among others,’’ he explained.
Gora advised motorists to avoid over speeding as the highways had a lot of potholes with high capacity to cause accidents.
The commander, further warned recalcitrant commercial drivers in the state, to shun dangerous over taking and reckless driving to prevent road accidents from occurring. (NAN)
