Retired Brig-Gen. Atom Kpera to chair Tor Tiv coronation committee

Makurdi, Jan. 5, 2017 (NAN) Retired Brig.- Gen. Atom Kpera, a former military governor of Benue State, has been selected to head the committee for the coronation of the fifth Tor Tiv.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the decision was taken on Thursday in Makurdi at the end of a meeting between Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue and the Tiv Traditional Council.

NAN recalls that Kpera also chaired the burial committee of the late Tor Tiv, Alfred Akawe Torkula, who ruled for 24 years.

At the meeting, the Special Adviser to the governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Titus Zam, was also selected to serve as the secretary of the committee.

The meeting deliberated on the installation of first class chiefs and the new Tor Tiv and it was agreed that the coronation would hold towards the end of February or the first two weeks of March.

Members of the committee include traditional rulers, leadership of the Mdzough U Tiv, some state lawmakers, representatives of prominent political parties, Tiv Diaspora groups, as well as co-opted government officials.

Also at the meeting, Ortom presented a Toyota Prado jeep and Hilux pick-up truck to each of the six first class chiefs that were recently selected.

He stated that in spite of the economic challenges, it was imperative for government to meet its responsibility of providing mobility for the chiefs to enable them discharge their duties.

The Acting Tor Tiv, Chief Ivokor Unongo, expressed appreciation to the governor, describing the presentation as unprecedented in the history of the state. (NAN)
