Dutse, Dec. 22, 2016 (NAN) The Jigawa Government has distributed 20 cars worth N21 million to remote communities in 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

Mr Ibrahim Hassan, Deputy Governor of the state, disclosed this while distributing the cars in Dutse on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the vehicles were provided under the Safe Motherhood Initiative popularly known as “Haihuwa Lafiya.”

Hassan said the vehicles would be used to convey pregnant women to health facilities during labour.

He explained that the vehicles would also be used during emergency situations to transport sick persons to hospitals.

The deputy governor said that the gesture was aimed at promoting safe motherhood and safe delivery among women in rural communities.

He said the project was geared towards the reduction of maternal and infant mortality.

Hassan said it would also encourage rural women to patronise health facilities for ante and post-natal care.

He noted that the initiative would create an attitudinal change among women and husbands at the grassroots on patronizing health facilities.

Hassan said the vehicles were strictly to be used for pregnant women and other sick persons in the benefiting communities.

“A tracker will be installed in each of the vehicles in order to know their exact location. They should not be put to personal use by anyone in the communities.

“So, we don’t expect to see these vehicles being used for any purpose than what they are provided for”, he warned. (NAN)
