Jos, Dec. 21, 2016 (NAN) AIG Dorothy Gimba, Commandant, Police Staff College, Jos has said that the training and re-training of police personnel was “very crucial” to effective service delivery.
“The training of police personnel will ensure the usage of best practises in policing the nation and should be encouraged at all times,” Gimba said in Jos, on Wednesday.
The officer, in an address at the joint graduation ceremony of the Tactical Leadership and Command Course and Advance Detective Course, said that such modern updates were needed to equip the force with current trends of policing.
She said that the courses were designed for middle level officers like Chief Superintendent of Police, who were mostly field commanders.
Gimba said that the training would reposition the officers and improve their managerial capacities toward a better perspective of modern trends in the management of crime.
“The training will enable you deal with issues of human rights, rule of law and other challenges facing the Nigeria Police; we want you to curtail all abuses so as to be in line with international standards.
“The goal of the training is to ensure that members of the force are competent, more confident and very efficient in the art of modern policing based on international practices.
“This course prepares you for tactical leadership responsibilities, while also providing you with necessary tools to understand effective policing in a democratic setting,” she told participants.
Gimba particularly pointed out the need to respect human rights, stressing that doing that was critical in the handling of emerging security challenges like civil disturbances, restiveness, kidnapping and militancy.
She urged them to improve on their intelligence gathering technique to curb the activities of criminals, especially in view of bandits’ usage of sophisticated weapons.
“W expect the course participants to go back to their formations or commands and exhibit better performance in service delivery in their communities.
` `We also urge you to go back and dominate your environment as reinvigorated personnel equipped with required skills and competences to add value to modern policing,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that 48 officers took part in the courses whose resource persons were drawn from the academia. (NAN)
