Arraignment
Abuja, Dec. 19, 2016 (NAN) Three men were on Monday brought before a Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly receiving stolen cars.
The defendants, Mathew Oche (28), Cletus Basil (42), and Oladameji Ikotun (40), are facing a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and dishonestly receiving stolen property.
The prosecutor, Adama Musa, told the court that on Sept. 20, one Glory Obioma, Mary Emmanuel and Akinade Ohisade, all of El-Salem Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, reported the case at Lugbe Police Station.
“On the same day, after the report was lodged, a gang of armed robbers broke into the complainants’ apartments at the above address and robbed them of their valuables, which include a Lexus jeep,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said that the case was later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Abuja.
He said that in the course of investigation, it was discovered that the defendants were receiving cars suspected to be stolen from a gang of armed robbers.
“The defendants know very well that those cars were forcefully collected from their owners by armed robbers,’’ the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 97 and 317 of the Penal Code.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Teribo Jim, however, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200, 000 each and a surety each in like sum.
Jim ordered that the sureties must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case to Jan. 13, for hearing. (NAN)
