

Torgah wins WAGT championship, Odoh emerge first order of merit winner

Abuja, Dec. 18, 2016 (NAN) Ghana’s Vincent Torgah on Sunday clinched victory at the last West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) Championship of the 2016 season, while Nigeria’s Andrew Odoh emerged first winner of the Order of Merit.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the WAGT Championship which teed-off on Friday ended on Sunday at the Arsenal Golf Club, Obinze, Owerri, Imo.
Chief Edwin Osuhor, the Rule Official confirmed the results to NAN on Sunday.
He said: “Torgah, a two-time runner-up played spectacular rounds of golf on the last two days of the tournament shooting a total score of 12 under in 36 holes.
“He scored the lowest round of the 2016 season and holds the best 18 holes score record of the West Africa Golf Tour season.
“The Ghanaian player shot 7 under (65) in a round of golf with 9 birdies and 2 bogeys at the WAGT Championship in Owerri.
“He played the front 9 with a total score of 31 making 4 birdies in the last 5 holes and shot 34 on the back 9 after birding the last 3 holes.
“This classic performance at the Tour Championship added glamour to the final tournament of the year,” he said.
Osuhor also noted that Torgah’s victory showed that “hard work rewards”.
Torgah was quoted as saying that “since I became a member of the Tour, I feel more comfortable, more confident in my game because I have been playing regularly and it has boosted my morale”.
Knowing that he hits the ball very long and that Arsenal is an open course, Torgah revealed that he had to stay focus.
“I had been knocking on the door for three times and I knew this time the chance will be mine.”
Osuhor noted that Torgah played 5 under (67) on the last day to win his first tournament on the West Africa Golf Tour.
Torgah was closely followed by Nigeria’s Odoh who finished second, followed by Gift Willy, who took the third spot while Kabiru Haruna occupied the fourth position with Tobias Chidiebere coming fifth.
Also, Osuhor revealed that Nigeria’s number one ranked player, Odoh, had become the first winner of the Order of Merit of the WAGT with a total of 2650 points followed by Ghanaian Vincent Torgah with 2115 points.
“Odoh featured three wins in the West Africa Golf Tour 2016 events, the Inaugural Zion Orphanage Charity Tournament, Port Harcourt Classic and Nigeria Masters.
“He holds the record for most victories in all six tournaments of the 2016 season and finished runner up in the other three events.
“The 35 year old from Benue State, Nigeria has had several winnings since becoming professional in 2004,” he said.
