Ajimobi tasks South West Speakers on effective legislation

Ibadan, Dec. 13, 2016 (NAN) Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Tuesday urged Speakers of Houses of Assembly in South West states to work toward ensuring effective and people- focused legislation.

He made the call while declaring open the Conference of South West Speakers held at CarltonGate Exclusive Hotel in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference had as theme: “Effective Legislative Governance and Service Delivery Reforms in the South-West Region.”

Ajimobi, who was represented by Alhaji Ismael Alli, the Secretary to the State Government, also urged stakeholders and career civil servants in the houses of assembly to remove bottlenecks impeding effective legislative works.

“The leadership in the various Houses of Assembly in the region should endeavour to place high premium on its effectiveness in making the legislative arm meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

“Such, if ensured, will help them in the passage of people-focused bills tailored toward ensuring good governance,” he said.

The governor also called for effective synergy between the legislature and the executive on issues that could improve the lives of the people in its entirety.

“I believe the main objective behind the establishment of this forum is to foster cooperation and integration among the various houses of assembly in the region to ultimately afford stakeholders with the best global practices,’’ he said.

Earlier, Hon. Michael Adeyemo, the Vice-Chairman, South West Conference of Speakers, said that theme of  the forum  was apposite, considering the region’s unifying factors and peculiarities.

Adeyemo, who is also the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, said such a conference encourages partnership, cooperation and collaboration.

“All these will engender mutual benefits, developments and identification of legislative reform priorities for South West states.

“I like to let us know that there is need to constantly and periodically interface with each other on any milestone recorded with a view to fostering cooperation and integration in the region,” he said.

He commended the United Kingdom Department for International Development(DFID), Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn(PERL) and Development Agenda for Western Nigeria(DAWN) for their support.

NAN reports that the events was attended by Hon. Najeem Salam, the Speaker, Osun House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Omirin, former Ekiti State Speaker as well as other dignitaries. (NAN)
