Lagos, Dec. 9, 2016 (NAN) Mrs Modupe Shode, an Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, says research is vital to  the advancement of nursing in the country.

Shode made this known on the sidelines of the 11th Annual Conference of Nurses in Lagos on Friday.

The theme of the conference was: “Advanced Nursing Practice: “Research as a Tool for Professionalism”.

She said with adequate time, funds and passion committed to research, it would go a long way to take nursing to the next level.

“Because research needs a lot of interest; they must be passionate about it.

If there is no passion, even if there is money, and there is time and there is no passion there is this lukewarm attitude.

“But, if there is passion they will do it, within three months they should be able to achieve something.

“So, we also as nurse leaders we should be ready to take it upon ourselves to identify those nurses and then find a way to help them to secure funds from our nursing and midwifery council.

“And probably have an exclusive permission from the chief medical director of the hospital.’’

According to her, lots of people do not want to do research, because of the fund implications.

“We find out that lots of people do not want to do research, because of the fund implications, finance.

“It is time consuming; it needs a lot of intellect, because we have to be able to do a lot of analyses.

“If you want to have a concrete research that is accurate, that can be presentable or be published, it must be done properly.

“With research, the profession will not go static, the profession will continue to evolve; there will be new areas of discipline to look into and for improvement.

“So, there must be time, but there should be money and there must be interest; those are the three things that have hindered nursing.”
