Lagos, Dec. 9, 2016 (NAN) The Secretary, Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Sunny Obot, on Friday applauded the turnout of athletes at the 2016 Korean Ambassador Cup (KAC), describing it as “extraordinary’’.
Obot, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that 309 athletes were participating in the competition as against 150 recorded in 2015.
NAN reports that the tournament which began on Dec. 8 and to end on Dec. 10 is holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Obot said that the number of participants indicated a geometric progression in the development of Taekwondo.
“We have never recorded this number of athletes since the inception of this competition, in fact, this year’s turnout is something else, I am impressed,’’ he said.
He said that the federation provided the first 150 athletes free accommodation for the three-day event.
The NTF secretary disclosed that winners in the sixteen weight categories of the competition would go home with complete standard taekwondo kits as prizes.
“This year’s gift for winners will be the taekwondo uniform otherwise known as “Dubok’’, head gear, body protector, arm guide and shin guide among others,’’ he said.
Obot, however, said the economic situation had affected quantity of products from their sponsors.
NAN reports that the KAC is hosted by the NTF in conjunction with the Lagos State Taekwondo Association.
It is equally sponsored by Korean Embassy in Abuja. (NAN)
