Mararaba (Nasarawa State), Dec. 2, 2016 (NAN) A Grade 1 Area Court Mararaba on Friday granted N50,000 bail to a businessman, Emma Umah, who allegedly refused to pay his debt of N60,000 since 2013.

The defendant had denied committing the offence that contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Mr Albert Maga, further ordered the defendant to produce one surety in like sum.

He also ordered that the surety must own a national identity card and a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

Maga said: “If the defendant fails to meet the bail terms before the next adjourned date, he will be remanded in Keffi prison.”

The defendant, a resident of Aunty Alice area, Mararaba in Nasarawa State, is facing a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The complainant, Mr David Nwali, a businessman, alleged that that the defendant failed to pay up the balance of the transaction they had since 2013.

“The defendant collected 10 bags of cement valued at N20,000 (N2000 per bag) and 500 blocks valued at N60,000 which sums up to N80,000.

“Only N20,000 was paid by the defendant; he has blatantly refused to pay the remaining N60,000,” Nwali said.

He also said that all efforts to recover the balance from the defendant proved abortive.

The case was adjourned till Dec. 22. (NAN)
