Abuja, Nov. 23, 2016 (NAN) An ICT expert, Prof. Vincent Asor, says training and retraining in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will assist the sector develop and contribute to economic development.

Asor, who is the President of Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that training, retraining and encouraging people to participate in workshops and seminars would make them acquire more experiences in ICT.

“There is a missing link that we have to get straight because  the entire industry today is being driven by information technology.

“We have moved from the issue of manual operations to digital operations, what it simply means is that this is the opportunity to train more in ICT.

“Now, whatever you want to do, whether it is job creation or recreation without information technology you are not going anywhere.

“Additionally, you need training to be able to manage yourself within the framework of what you are doing because if you do not do them properly, you may make mistakes.

“In the 80s when computer was introduced newly into the system, people resisted it because they felt it was taking over their jobs.

“But now a lot of people are embracing it,’’ he said.

He said that with ICT, more people were being employed to do the same business but to do it more efficiently and effectively, “and the return on investment is even higher’’.

Asor, however, commended the Federal Government for actively involving youths in ICT.

He said that NITDA had been established by government to manage the whole of this processes.

“NITDA has gone round establishing ICT centres in almost all the geo-political zones in the country and involving the youths in a lot of its activities.

“The minister of communication is doing a lot, going all over the place giving lectures and also the advocacy group of the Nigeria Computer Society is also doing their best,” he said.  (NAN)
