30-years-old unemployed blames alleged theft of cable on starvation

Ilorin, Aug. 8, 2018 (NAN) A 30-year-old unemployed man, Isaac Jolugba, on Wednesday pleaded not guilty before an Ilorin Chief Magistrates’ Court, for the theft of electric cable, but blamed it on starvation.

Jolugba, a resident of Egbe, in Yagba West local government area of Kogi, was however ordered to be remanded for alleged vandalization of transformer cable.

The Chief magistrate, Mr J. B Salihu, remanded the accused in Ilorin Prisons, until he is able to get a reliable surety, in the sum of N200,000.

The prosecutor, Mr Bode Silas, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug. 2

He told the court that a case of vandalization of transformer cable was reported to the Intelligence and Investigation Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kwara headquarters, via its station office in Ilorin.

Silas said that representatives of Irewolede Akerebiata community reported the matter at one of their station offices, that an accused was arrested by some members of the community fOr allegedly vandalizing their transformer.

The community said that the accused was arrested with electric cable, alleged to have been stolen from the transformer belonging to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, located within the community.

He said that further investigations and confessional statement by the accused under caution revealed that, he was to take the alleged stolen cable out of Ilorin to sell.

The prosecutor said the case contravened Section 286 of the penal code law. (NAN)
