Lagos, Aug. 6, 2018 (NAN) Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos has given 200 West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE,) forms to indigent students in the area.
The Chairman of the council, Mr Valentine Braimoh, made the disclosure on Monday at a media briefing in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the briefing was organised by the council to reel out the achievements of the Braimoh -led administration in the last one year.
The chairman also said that his administration had given Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) examination forms to students in the area to assist them in their tertiary educational pursuits.
Braimoh said the forms were given out to support students in the area because he believed that the future of the country lay in qualitative education.
“The future of the country is dependent on the quality of education of her citizens.
“It is on the basis of this that we have given out no fewer than 200 WASSCE forms to indigents who are brilliant students in the area to realise their educational dreams.
“Also, we have in the last one year, given out UTME forms to students in the area to enable them take the examinations to study courses of their choices in the tertiary institutions.
“We are happy with the results of the students who benefitted from the two forms and we will continue to do our best to support education in the local government”, he said.
Braimoh said that plans were on the way to give 200 additional WASSCE forms to another set of beneficiaries in the area.
He said his administration placed high premium on education and would continue to pursue efforts to develop the sector at the grassroots.
In the area of environment, the chairman said that the council had partnered with relevant stakeholders to improve sanitation.
Braimoh said that many drains had been de-silted in the area and illegal dumpsites were regularly cleared.
He listed some of the areas that had been cleared of refuse to include 7th Avenue, 2nd Avenue and Durbar Road, all in Festac Town.
The chairman added that his administration had recorded great strides in the area of security as it had supported law enforcement agencies to reduce crime in the area.
He said work was at an advanced stage on the renovation of Festac Link Bridge, to facilitate movement of people and goods.
Braimoh added that his administration had also reconstructed 1st Avenue Road, 11th road,4th Avenue to ease movement in the area.
The chairman said 4th avenue road had also received the needed attention and that more roads in the area were receiving the attention of the council.
Braimoh added that his administration had also built health infrastructure in the area to attend to the health needs of the people.
He appealed to residents to pay their dues and taxes promptly to enable the council to do more.
“We are committed to doing much more in Amuwo-Odofin, but we need the support of the people in prompt of taxes and dues to deliver more”, he said. (NAN)
