3 men charged with break-in, theft of N1.4m torchlight

Lagos, Aug. 1, 2018 (NAN) Three men on Wednesday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court charged with breaking into a shop and stealing cartons of torchlight worth N1.4 million.

The accused are Tajudeen Jubrila, 18; Ali Yunusu, 20; Idris and Ibrahim Seidu, 21 — all residents of Idumota on Lagos Island.

The trio is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing before Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat.

They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties each.

Sule-Amzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed in reputable companies and should have properties in Lagos.

In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of two years tax payment as part of the bail condition.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that the accused broke into the shop of the complainant, Offor Chidiebere,
and stole 20 cartons of torchlight valued at N1.4 million.

Emuerhi said the accused committed the offences on June 28 at 3.00. a.m. at No. 72, Dosumu St., Idumota on Lagos Island.

“They broke into the shop of the complainant through the ceiling and stole the items but were apprehended by security guards.”

The offences contravened Sections 287, 310 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 310 stipulates
seven years for burglary.

Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

The case was adjourned until Nov. 29. (NAN)
