Minna, July 17, 2018 (NAN) A Minna Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 22-year-old man, Adamu Ibrahim to one year in prison for belonging to a gang of thieves.
He was arraigned before the court on a two-count charge of belonging to a gang of thieves and being in possession of dry leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Muazu Abdullahi, told the court that on May 12, a team of operatives attached to IGP Special Tactical Squad, stormed Gidan Kwanu, in Bosso Local Government Area, following a tip off.
Abdullahi said the team was said to have arrested the accused while selling Indian hemp, and investigation revealed that he belonged to a notorious gang of thieves, who usually terrorised people on Minna-Bida road.
He said the offences were contrary to Section 306 of the Penal Code, subsection 5(1) Cap 176 of the Indian hemp Act.
When the charges were read to him, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
The prosecutor, thereafter, prayed the court to try him summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The Magistrate, Murtala Ibrahim, sentenced the accused to one year imprisonment without an option of fine. (NAN)
