Lagos , July 12, 2018 (NAN) A 55-year-old businessman, Charles Aniemeka, on Thursday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ court for allegedly issuing N300,000 dud cheque, purported for his rent, to his landlord, Mr Macmillan Ibe.

Aniemeka, who resides at No 24, Akinwale Shittu St., Thomas Estate, Ajah, Lagos is being tried on a charge of issuance of dud cheques, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 15, at No. 20, Oladipupo Oluwole St., Ojodu Berger, Lagos.

Eruada said that the accused issued a Skye Bank plc. dud cheque of N300, 000 to Ibe.

“The accused rented a N600, 000 apartment from Ibe but gave out N300,000 as deposit.

“Aniemeka issued Ibe a post-dated cheque of N300, 000 as balance of his house rent.

“The cheque was dishonoured when it was presented at the bank because of insufficient fund.

“All efforts made by the landlord to get the accused to balance his payment was unsuccessful as he absconded and switched off his phone,” he said.

Eruada said the offence contravened Section 316 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) which stipulates a seven-year jail term for offenders, if found guilty.

The Chief Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should own land within the jurisdiction of the court.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until July 30 for mention. (NAN)
