Osun, (Kuta), July 11,2018 (NAN) The Chairman, Supreme Council of Owu Obas, Oba Adekunle Oyelude has called on Nigeria youths, especially Owu youths, to engage in agriculture in order to curb poverty in Nigeria.
Oyelude, who is also the Olowu of Owu Kuta, made the call on Wednesday during the maiden edition of the meeting of Royal Union of Owu People (RUOP) 2018 in his palace in Kuta, Osun.
The traditional ruler noted that youths in the area were not interested in agriculture because they were not aware of the benefits of agriculture in food production and self-sustenace.
He said that youths needed to be enlightened on the need to go back to farming and take advantage of the Anchor Borrower programme introduced by the Federal Government to boost food security of the nation.
“The Anchor Borrower programme of the Federal Government is to encourage people to go back to farming and curb poverty, the programe is not only for youths but also for everyone.
“ I urge Owu people, especially youths, to engage in agriculture and take advantage of the anchor borrower programme of the federal government,’’ Oyelude said.
He said that the need for youths to take to farming for living had become imperative because white-collar jobs were becoming very difficult to come by.
In his contribution, the National President of RUOP, Maj-Gen. Ekundayo Opaleye (rtd), said he union had been making conscious effort aimed at empowering youths and women in the area through agriculture.
Opaleye also said that RUOP had 50 hectares of land at Orile Owu to be used for agriculture.
The national president, who identified finance as one of the challenges facing ROUP at empowering Owu youths and women, solicited for support from the well-meaning Nigerians for the union.
He urged Owu people to always assist one and other to promote unity and progress of the owus.
Dignitaries at the occasion were: Oba Madojutola Ajiboye, Oba Gabriel Adewoye, Oba Mufutau Ogunnukan, Oba Mukaila Abajo, Oba Michael Adesina, Oba Olusanya Dosumu, Oba Nelson Ogunlari among others. (NAN)
