Lagos, July 5, 2018 (NAN) A 36-year-old travelling agent, Alex Iyangbese, who allegedly involved in a South Korean Visa scam, was on Thursday docked before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, who lives at Jabi, Gwarinpa area of Abuja, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining under false pretenses.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 20 at 10.00a.m. at No.1, Oluwole Church St., Oshodi, Lagos.
Emuerhi said that the accused, who claimed to be a travelling agent, collected N1 million from the complainant, Tochukwu Michael, with a promise to procure him a South Korean Visa.
“Whenever the complainant request for the visa, the accused always gives different excuses and later brought a visa which was confirmed to be fake.
“The accused collected the money on installments and failed to get the visa as promised.
“He converted the money into his personal use,’’ Emuerhi said
He said that the accused also collected the complainant’s international passport with number AO8483151.
Emuerhi said that whenever the complainant asked for his money, the accused threatened his life.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 314 stipulates 15 years for obtaining money by false pretext for any offender found guilty.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty of the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail of N200, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Sule-Amzat said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until Oct. 22. (NAN)
