Lagos, July 4, 2018 (NAN) A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 32-year-old unemployed man, Ismail Ibrahim to six months in prison for drug trafficking.
The convict, who is unemployed, was brought before Justice Ibrahim Buba by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on a one-count charge of trafficking 300g of Hemp also known as Cannabis Sativa.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
After his plea was taken, the facts of the case was reviewed by the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendered a certificate of test analysis, packaging of substance form, the bulk of drug exhibit, a request for scientific aid form, and the statement of the convict taken in English language.
Aernan also tendered a drug analysis form, and a large sealed envelope containing remnants of the restricted substance
The court admitted the exhibits and marked them accordingly.
The prosecutor then urged the court to convict the accused based on his plea and evidences adduced.
The court found the accused guilty of the offence as charged, and accordingly, convicted and sentenced him to a term of six months imprisonment, beginning from the date of his arrest.
According to the charge, the NDLEA said that the convict was arrested on March 30, at Ikotun in Lagos.
The prosecutor said that the narcotics weighing 300g, was recovered from the convict on the said date, following a tip off.
He said that the convict was consequently arrested.
According to the prosecution, Hemp is similar to Cocaine and Heroine LSD, which are all classified by the Agency as restricted narcotics.
The offences contravenes the provisions of sections 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
Before his sentence, the convict had begged the court to give him another opportunity to turn a new leaf, adding that he was a first offender. (NAN)
