Ikeja, June 25, 2018 (NAN) A 49-year-old businessman, Ferdinard Ughelu, who allegedly failed to supply some units of air conditioners
after collecting N2.7 million, was on Monday hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Ughelu, who lives at No. 22, Oba-Bunmi St., off Abule Taylor, Abule Egba, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on a two-count charge
of conspiracy and stealing to which he pleaded not guilty.

The accused obtained N2.7 million from the complainant, Mr Martins Okoruwa, on the pretext of supplying air conditioners to him.

“The accused approached the complainant to assist him supplying some units of air-conditioners at Ewu in Edo, claiming to be his church member and one of the suppliers at Christ Embassy.

“Based on this, he was given the contract and was paid N2.7 million; he promised to supply them.

“The accused absconded and could not also be reached on his mobile phone.

“Efforts by the complainant to get him to refund the money were unsuccessful,” Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi had told the court.

He alleged that the complainant later went to Ughelu’s shop but it was under lock.

“On enquiry, he was told that nobody bears that name in the area. The complainant then realised he has been duped and he decided
to report to the p[olice,” Emuerhi said.

According to him, the accused committed the offences on May 16, 2016 about 2.40 p.m. at Christ Embassy Church, Ikeja, Lagos.

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides three years imprisonment while Section 411 stipulates two years.

Ruling on the oral bail application of the accused, Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted him N100, 000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and
adjourned the case until Aug 2. (NAN)
