Court jails mechanic for stealing truck battery

Minna, June 22, 2018 (NAN) A Minna Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, sentenced a 29-year-old mechanic, Awulu Musa, to six weeks in prison for stealing the battery of a lorry valued N90, 000.

Musa was docked on one-count charge of theft, contrary to Section 288 of the Penal Code.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Muazu Abdullahi, told the court that one Kabiru Salihu, reported the matter at the  Minna  Police  Station on June 19.

Abdullahi said the complainant, a security guard with the NNPC filling station, was at his duty post on June 17, when he heard footsteps.

According to him, the complainant flashes his torchlight and saw the accused running away.

He said the complainant quickly went round and discovered that a motor battery had been stolen.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The Police Prosecutor, thereafter, prayed the court to try him summarily in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In her ruling, Magistrate Amina Musa, sentenced Musa to six weeks in prison or to pay a fine of N10, 000. (NAN)
