Ikeja, June 20, 2018 (NAN) A 33-year-old father of two, Daniel Oye, was on Wednesday sent to jail for the next 7 years for stealing phones and other accessories valued at N1million.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, said that she passed judgment based on the facts of the case, as confirmed in the report and the plea for leniency by the convict.

“I hereby sentence you to seven years imprisonment, without an option of fine.

“The sentence will serve as a deterrent to others,’’ Sule-Amzat said.

Oye, a bus conductor, was arraigned on a charge of stealing. He pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that Oye committed the offence on June 3 at about 12.35 a.m. in Oluwaga area of Ipaja, Lagos.

He alleged that the convict was apprehended with an iron rod he used to break into the shop of the complainant, Fola Douglas.

Emuerhi said the convict and his accomplices, now at large, were in a vehicle loading the stolen items but on noticing the night guards around, they drove off leaving Oye in the building.

“The convict stole different phones, Bluetooth and memory cards valued at N1million, property of Douglas,’’ he said.

He said that Oye was later apprehended and taken to Ipaja Police Station, where he gave a voluntary statement, confessing to the crime.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates seven years imprisonment for stealing. (NAN)
