Abuja, June 13, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) on Wednesday suspended all youth congresses until the harmonisation of the two factional leaders were completed.
The President of NYCN, Mr Murtala Garba disclosed this at a media briefing in Abuja.
” Any Congress without due process will further throw the Council into more leadership impasse.
” It is very essential to conduct a Unity Congress where all State Chapters and Affiliate Voluntary Youth Organisations will participate,
“To achieve this, the leadership of both factions have resolved to ensure proper harmonisation of the two leadership, as one, in preparation for the conduct of a Unity Congress before the end of this year,” he said.
Garba said after consultation with NYCN stakeholders, it was resolved that state and the two parallel Congresses as scheduled would further sustain factional leadership, which negates the principles of a united, indissoluble and indivisible NYCN.
He said the Agboola led Executive earlier conveyed a management meeting to fix Congress date, which was equally viewed as not representing the collective decisions by all structures of NYCN.
Garba said he had neither conveyed nor presided over any management meeting where both Electoral and Congress Planning Committees were present.
“The leadership of NYCN has been a subject of crisis over the years and series of attempt were previously made to resolve the crisis amicably but didn’t yield the deserving positive results.
“The polarisation of the apex youth body in Nigeria is considered as a disservice to the great sacrifices of our fore bearers and helpless Nigerian Youth whose interest the NYCN represents,” he said.
Garba said the faction crisis would destroy the prestige and reputation of the organisation, saying the council was under attack by the hijackers and detractors of NYCN benefitting from the crisis, in furtherance of their failed selfish agenda.
“The two factional leadership as being led by Murtala Muhammed Garba Gamji and Abdul-Rahman Olawale Agboola engaged in series of progressive discussions to broker permanent harmonisation of the two leadership to promote the interest of Nigeria Youth.
“President Muhammadu Buhari recently signed the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ Bill into law, to ensure participatory in governance in favour of Nigerian Youth.
”We therefore feel that, this singular effort of Mr President deserves collaborative support of the NYCN Leadership in order to ensure that Nigerian Youth are well coordinated for the challenges ahead”.
Garba said a proper management committee meeting would be conveyed to fix a suitable date for the Congress within the shortest possible time.
He said the electoral and Congress Planning Committees would be included as enshrined in the NYCN Constitution.
“We cannot afford disunity any longer as the intricacies surrounding the disunity will no longer be tolerated nor condoned.
“The leadership of NYCN is also aware that some persons, who acted on their own, on the 3rd November, 2017 changed the Incorporated Trustees of the NYCN by substituting their own names without recourse to the NYCN tradition, convention and constitution.
“We have informed the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Security Agencies and all relevant agencies that the NYCN Leadership is not privy to the purported change of Trustees and that all documents submitted to the commission”.(NAN)
