Abuja, May 26, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Council of Nigeria on Saturday appealed to Federal government to address the challenges affecting the welfare of children in the country.

The Directorate of Education and Training, Mr Nnadi Uwaoma made the appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja ahead of the children’s day celebration scheduled for May 27.

The theme of the 2018 Children’s day celebration is ‘’Diversifying the Nigerian Economy through Education on Entrepreneurship’’.

He stressed the need to address the plights of the Nigerian child, the out of school and the less privileged children such as the ‘Almagiris’ in the North.

“It is also our responsibility to ensure that children in our society fulfil their potentials and dreams.

“This can truly be achieved by engaging children in educational activities that will enable them to make use of their skills and talents in our society,’’ Uwaoma said.

He, however, said that for change to be actualised in the education system, government must not relent in ensuring education for all.

“We appreciate the efforts of the government, especially its giant stride in officiating the ‘Home Grown School Feeding Programme” whereby making meals available for the primary school pupils across the country.

“This gesture has promoted the welfare of the Nigerian child; we commend schools that have carried out feasible programme on the development of quality education in IDPcamps,’’.

Uwaoma said in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Directorate of Education and Training of NYCN in collaboration with major education development partners would host the Abuja school festival on June 29, 2018.

He said about 20 secondary schools in the FCT would be assembled in Abuja to exhibit their entrepreneurship skills.

NAN reports that NYCN is a youth volunteer organisation that operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and sport.
