Cutlass-point robbery : Jobless man, 30, arraigned

Lagos, May 23, 2018 (NAN) An unemployed man, Azzez Saka, who allegedly robbed a woman of her handbag containing N30,000 and a cell phone valued at N45, 000 at cutlass-point, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Saka, 30, who reside at Ajegunle area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, who gave the ruling, said the sureties should be blood relations of the accused.

In addition, the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the offences with others now at large on May 4 at 10.30 p.m. at Elegbin, Ajegunle area of Lagos.

Emuerhi said accused, who was armed with cutlass and some other dangerous weapons, robbed the complainant, Mrs Akeem Olamide of N30,000 and an Infinix phone all valued at N75, 000.

“The complainant was returning home from work when she was attacked by the accused, who dispossessed her of her belongings.”

The offences contravened Sections 296 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 296 stipulates seven years jail term for robbery.

July 26 has been fixed for the trial. (NAN)
