Reunification

Ibadan, May 18, 2018 (NAN) A Seoul-based NGO, Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light (HWPL) and some European experts, have pledged support for peaceful reunification in the Korean Peninsula.
A statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Friday by HWPL Media Officer, Jackie Kim, said the pledge was made at a Pan-European Peace Forum organised by the NGO in Frankfurt.
HWPL, had in consultation with UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), organised the event to advocate international cooperation for global peace and support for the peaceful reunification initiative.
Man Hee Lee, the HWPL Chairman, according to the statement, said that handing over a peaceful world to children is the greatest legacy.
“If a single country achieves peace, it does not mean the world has become peaceful. Peace has to be realised in the entire world.
“If each person walks in the path toward peace, peace will be accomplished in the global community,’’ Lee, a Korean war veteran, was quoted as saying.
Dr Manfred Welker, a member of the Frankfurt City Council, stressed the need for civil society organisations to participate actively in enthroning peace across the world, particularly the reunification of Korea.
He recalled how a small gathering in Leipzig sparked peaceful demonstrations for Germany’s reunification, saying what would bring Korea together by collaboration are the efforts of the people.
Prof. Hans Kochler, the President of International Progress Organisation, said the issues of denuclearisation and reunification of Korea are mutually reinforcing.
He noted that a reunified Korea would guarantee better security for both the North and the South.
Kochler maintained that nuclear disarmament should be carried out not only in Korea but also in the rest of the world.
“There must be no policy of double standards concerning disarmament obligations of states,’’ the statement quoted him as saying.
The statement also said that Welker at the end of the forum presented a letter of support for peaceful unification in the Korean Peninsula and global peace to HWPL delegation.
HWPL is collecting letters of support from state to civil leaders for onward transmission to the leaders of North and South Korea in line with its advocacy campaign for global peace.
The Seoul-based NGO is also implementing peace education programmes in educational institutions as well as collaborating with experts and teachers worldwide toward developing peace education textbooks and curriculum. (NAN)
