Ikeja, May 17, 2018 (NAN) An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday admitted three men to a N250,000 bail each after being charged with conspiracy and possession of toy guns and other dangerous weapons.
The accused are: Ololo John, 34; Augustine Emmanuel, 21, and Thank-God Okorie, 23, all residents of Poka in Epe, Lagos State.
They are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and being in possession of two toy guns and other dangerous weapons.
The chief magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, ruled that the accused persons must produce two sureties each, who must show evidence of payment of three years’ tax to the Lagos State Government (LASG).
She adjourned the case until July 16.
Earlier on, the prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, had told the court that the accused persons committed the offences on April 29, at 1.30 p.m. at Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
He said, “The trio were apprehended by men of the Nigerian Police from Maroko Division during a stop-and-search.
“They could not give a satisfactory explanation on the ownership of the toy guns in possession.’’
The prosecutor said that the police patrol team had stopped a Toyota Corolla Saloon car with registration number AKD 258 AP belonging to the accused.
The police searched the car and found two toy guns and iron rods under the foot mat of the passengers’ seat.
Nwangwu said that the accused conspired with others still at large to commit the offences.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 51 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 51 provides a two-year jail term for being in possession of guns while Section 411 stipulates two years jail for conspiracy.
The accused, however, entered a not ‘guilty plea’ and their lawyer applied for bail on liberal terms. (NAN)
