Ikeja, May 17, 2018 (NAN) A commercial driver, Nojeem Ayinde, 28, on Thursday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a gold chain valued at N700,000

The defendant, who resides at Alfa-Nla Street, Oke-Koto, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on a count charge of stealing.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 21, at Abule-Odu Bus Stop, Idimu, Lagos at 4.00 p.m.

He alleged that the accused stole a gold chain from one Alice Akpede, who was waiting to board a bus at the bus stop.

“Ayinde was on a motorcycle and forcefully snatched the complainant’s gold chain from her neck and immediately speed off.

“The defendant was caught by angry mob, who came to the rescue of the complainant, and he was handed over to the police at the Ikotun Police Division.”

Nwangwu said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Section 287 provides a three-year jail term for offenders.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y. O. Aje-Afunwa, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case until July 16 for mention. (NAN)
