Ramadan: Concentrate more on supplications, not food, cleric warns

Supplication

Ilorin, May 17, 2018 (NAN) An Islamic cleric, Malam Yinusa Bello, has admonished Muslims to concentrate more on supplications and pay less attention to ‘food fiesta’ during the month of Ramadan.

Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN,) on Thursday in Ilorin that it was imperative that priority be placed on spiritual activities that would earn rewards.

He said it had been observed that some people paid more attention to ‘food’ and ‘cooking’ to the detriment of intensified supplications.

”For some people, the entire month of Ramadan revolves around food.

”They spend the entire day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking only about food, instead of concentrating on Salat, reciting the Holy Quran and other acts of worship.

”They think so much about food that they turn the month of ‘fasting’ into the month of ‘feasting.”

”Come Iftar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks; they are missing the very purpose of fasting,” he observed.

Bello noted that in most cases, such habit resulted in extravagance and wastage of food, something Almighty God frowned against in the Holy Quran.

The cleric also advised women not to be too carried away in trying to fulfill their role of cooking for their husbands at the expense of moving closer to Allah.

”Some of the sisters, either by their own choice or forced by their husbands, cook all day and all night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray ‘Ishaa’, let alone pray ‘Taraweeh’ or ‘Tahajjud’ or even read the Holy Qur’an,” Bello noted (NAN)
