Lagos, May 16, 2018 (NAN) Chief Thad Enyinna, a don, has urged working parents to make out time for their children to ensure proper upbringing.

Enyinna, a lecturer at the Nigerian Association for Family Development (NAFAD), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday that children properly brought up stood the chance of becoming  industrious in future.

“However, the work should not take so much of your time that you cannot make enough effort to be able to discharge your responsibility of actually physically interacting with your family.

“Also you need to have time to give formation; moral formation, spiritual formation, even human formation to your own children; so that eventually they get gradually formed and moulded into very productive adulthood.

“That’s why it is absolutely important to discharge your responsibility in the family effectively so that you can transfer to the next generation people who can actually add value to society.

“If you have to work so hard, so encumbered by work that you do not have time for your family; then that becomes a problem because another side of life begins to suffer.

“Children begin to grow up as if they have no parents. The father figure or the mother figure becomes absent in their  lives.’’

Enyinna said that children who grew up outside the home of their parents tend to be wayward children due to peer group influence.

He said that the upbringing of a child should not be delegated to someone else, government or an institution, other than the family.

Enyinna said that father and mother were naturally endowed to bring up a child and this endowment could not be transferred to a third party.

He described as “immoral’’ when parents abdicate their responsibility by sending their children to be brought up by a grandmother, either because they were  working somewhere or because they did not want any disturbance.

Enyinna, therefore, advised that in situations where such happened, the parent should find a way of talking to the child on regular basis.

He said that this would add value to the child; even though it was not the best but better than doing nothing. (NAN)
