Enugu, May 10, 2018 (NAN) The National Orientation Agency in Enugu State has pledged to partner with interested organisations in reviving reading culture among the youth.

The Director of the agency in the state, Mr Isaac Onukwube made the pledge in Enugu on Thursday in a chat with members of the Coal City Literary Foundation (CCLF).

Onukwube expressed worry about the collapse of reading in secondary and tertiary schools.

According to him, reading culture is dead and not dwindling among the youth in Nigeria.

“You cannot even promote literacy in the country as many students cannot speak or write well again.

“We cannot fold our hands. We need to go back to the basics; we need to revive declined values from home.

“It is even worse in work places as people no longer read even newspapers. It is that bad,” he said.

He commended the foundation for its campaign to promote reading and writing skills in the state and pledged to work with it.

Earlier, the President of the foundation, Dr Adaobi Nwoye said that it had done a lot to improve reading skills in schools and the society in general.

Nwoye said it had set up reading clubs and organised reading sessions in some secondary schools in the state.

She said that the foundation had flagged off its ‘Readers are Leaders’ project whereby literary icons and influential people were celebrated to encourage the youth to get educated.

Nwoye said that Enugu State Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would sponsor this year’s edition of the event holding on May 24 in the state.

She solicited partnership with NOA in its activities to change the reading attitude of the youth. (NAN)
