Abuja, May 10, 2018 (NAN) Girls and Youth Re-Integration Network (GYRIN), an NGO, has called on the Federal Government and parents to promote girl-child education in the country.
Miss Kehinde Awujoola, the President of the network, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday that promoting girl-child education was important because girls are the engine of national development.
She said that government needed to pay adequate attention to girl-child education system through policy framework and funding.
“Nigeria should prioritise girl-child education, it should have a consistent and well-articulated plan and it should have more than adequate budget for girls’ education.
“Let every parent also prioritise the girl-child education and take it that education is one legacy that the parent owes his child.
“It is very important that every girl-child deserves the best education that we can give her and this is not just a job for government, it is a job for the parents, the community leaders and every other leader.
“They should create sufficient awareness about the plight of the girls that are lacking education, among others,” the GYRIN president said
Awujoola stressed the need for parents to be actively involved in their children’s education because educating a girl is like educating a nation.
She also advised government to properly address factors like insecurity, cultural barriers and conflicts impeding girl-child education, adding that the safety and security of the girl-child in schools is very important to the country.
“Our children need to be safe in the schools; safe school initiatives and everything that ensures that a child can learn in a secure environment without fear of being kidnapped, abused or molested or discriminated against,” Awujoola said.
According to her, every child deserves quality education, if not free, at least an affordable quality education.
“Education should be accessible and should be affordable for every child,’’ Awujoola said. (NAN)
