Jos, May 7 2018(NAN) The Jimmy Carter Centre on Monday donated medical accessories, teaching/learning aids, laboratory equipment and medical consumables to the College of Health, Zawan, in Plateau.
Also donated by the centre were ICT equipment and classroom furniture.
Dr. Emmanuel Miri, the centre’s Country Director in Nigeria, who delivered the items to the college, said that the goal was to strengthen the capacity of the health education system to enhance the production of quality manpower.
“Our goal is to ensure the training of quality manpower to meet the maternal and child health needs of Nigeria,” he said.
Miri said that the centre was working with the Nigerian government in the development of a Nigeria Public Health Training Initiative (NPHTI), to ensure regular training for health personnel.
According to him, NPHTI focuses on training institutions that develop critical front line health workers that are very essential in healthcare delivery services, especially in rural Nigeria.
Miri urged the college’s provost to ensure that the items were used judiciously, and promised to continue to support the school.
Mr Toma Reng, the Provost, who thanked the centre for the gesture, said that it would enhance the provision of quality training for middle and lower level health workers, “especially those serving in the rural areas”.
Also speaking, Dr. Kunden Deyin, Plateau health commissioner, commended the Carter Center for the donation which, he said, would strengthen the training institution in the area of manpower capacity development.
Kunden challenged other Non-Governmental Organisations s to partner with the state government toward strengthening its health training institutions to meet global expectations. (NAN)
