Abuja, March 5, 2018 (NAN) Mr Julius Opetunsin, the Assistant Controller General, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service, has advised residents of the territory to be fire cautious.

Opetunsin gave the advice on Thursday during the fire service’s Annual Dry Season Campaign against indiscriminate bush burning at Sa’peyi Garki’s Palace, Abuja.

He said the campaign was timely “because the dry season seems to be over, but we are ushering in the cropping season where grasses are being cleared for farming activities.

“It is a planting season that is characterised with clearing and burning of bushes.

“If at all it is necessary to burn the bush, there must be absolute control.”

The assistant controller advised farmers and residents of FCT to be careful when dealing with fire, stressing that “fire can be our friend and it can also be our enemy.”

He also advised managers and handlers of petrol filling stations to discharge fuel at night when the weather was cool and not during sunny day.

The Sa’payi of Garki, Alhaji Usman Nga-Kupi, advised farmers to desist from setting fire on bushes.

He said bush burning could destroy plants and animals at the disadvantage of the community.

Nga-Kupi also urged parents to caution their children on use of electrical appliances as this could lead to fire outbreak. (NAN)
