NAFOWA launches skills acquisition centre, farming programme in Edo

Benin, May 2, 2018 (NAN) The Nigerian Air Force Officers Wives Association (NAFOWA) on Wednesday launched a Skill Acquisition and Vocational Training programme at the 107 Air Martine Base, Benin.

The National President of the association, Hajiya Hafsat Abubakar, while launching the programme, said it was the seventh in the history of the association.

Abubakar said that the programme was to address unemployment among members and the youth.

She said that the venture started in Makurdi, adding that the success recorded there brought the need for its expansion to other States.

She disclosed that about 1000 participants had graduated from the training in other states within the last two years, adding that 100 persons had already been registered for the programme in Edo.

The national president said that the skills to be acquired would attract high patronage that could easily create wealth and employment.

Mrs Omowumi Thanni, Coordinator, NAFOWA Vocational and ICT Centre, Lagos, said the training would last for 10 weeks.

Thanni also said that 12 instructors had been deployed for the exercise in Benin, adding that the centre would continue to promote employment as well as improve the living standard of Nigerians.

Mrs Omolola Shobande, the Coordinator of NAFOWA in Edo, said that the aim of the programme was to empower widows and women for wealth creation and self reliance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trainees will be taught soft furnishing; soap making; hair dressing; bead making; computer and ICT training; catering services and make up/make over techniques, among other skills.

NAN also reports that the NAFOWA president launched the farming season for the Base Youth Empowerment Through Agriculture (BYETA) farming season in the state.

She also inspected a pineapple farm, fishery farm and a plantain farm in the area. (NAN)
