Man lands in prison after admitting to stealing phones, cash

Lagos, April 23, 2018 (NAN) A man, Popoola Adewale, has landed in Kirikiri Prisons after admitting to stealing phones and cash on April 2, in Surulere area of Lagos before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, who gave the ruling after Adewale pleaded guilty for the crime, said that the accused should remain behind bars pending his sentence.

The accused, whose address was not provided, is facing charges of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, had told court that the accused committed the offences at 11.20 a.m. on April 2, at No. 1 Atan St., in Surulere area of Lagos State.

He said the accused conspired with others still at large and robbed a woman, Ayomide Ade of her mobile phones valued at N99,000 and N199,000 in cash.

Emuerhi said the accused, waylaid her and forcefully collected the two phones and money valued at N289, 000 from the complainant.

He alleged that the complainant, who was on her way to work, was attacked by the accused, who dispossessed her of her belongings.

“The accused was later apprehended by the police during a stop-and-search by a team of anti-crime police.’’

The offences contravened Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to three years imprisonment, according to Section 287 of the Criminal Law.

The case was adjourned until April 26 for a review of facts and sentence. (NAN)
