Lagos, April 23, 2018 (NAN)  An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on Monday, sentenced a 19-year-old applicant, Oladipupo Jide, to one month in jail for stealing cellphone, valued at N18, 000.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, who handed down the verdict, said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others.

Amzat advised Jide, whose address is unknown, to desist from committing further crime.

The convict, who was charged with a one-count charge of theft, pleaded guilty to the charge but asked the court to temper justice with mercy, saying he committed the crime due to ignorance and poverty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, had told the court that a complainant reported the case at the Police post inside Computer Village on August 14, 2017

Emuerhi said that the convict snatched the phone from the complainant, one Ocheme Antonia while she was making calls with the cell phone.

“The crime was committed on Aug. 14, 2017 at 2.00p.m at Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.”

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised). (NAN)
