Kano, April 19, 2018 (NAN) A Kano-based NGO, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has advised media organisations in the country to take serious interest in peace promotion as the 2019 general elections draw nearer.
The CITAD Assistant Programme Coordinator, Mr Sanusi Shazali-Sulaiman gave the advice while speaking with newsmen in Kano on Thursday.
He said the advice was necessary in order to foster national unity and ensure sustenance of peaceful coexistence in the country.
“I urge the media to take serious interest in peace promotion campaigns by curbing hate speech online with Hashtag of #No2HateSpeech.
“We also wish to appeal to editors and general public to engage and put more effort in countering hate speech on social media.”
The coordinator advised both the print and electronic media to be watchful of what to air or print by shunning hate speech promoters.
“We want to use this opportunity to call the attention of general public to keep reporting hate speech, gender harrassments online and other abusive uses of the social media.”
Shazali-Sulaiman said the organisation’s team of monitors was able to document 221 items of hate and dangerous speech reports online in March.
“Promoting campaign against hate speech requires collective effort hence our decision to partner with other relevant stakeholders to ensure success of the crusade,”he said.
He commended the MacArthur Foundation, journalists and other supporting the activities of the organisation. (NAN)
