Refuse

Lagos, April 18, 2018 (NAN) The former Chairman, Nigerian Environmental Society (NESLIC), Lagos Island Chapter, Mr John Ekoko, has urged residents of Lagos to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse within the metropolis.

Ekoko made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

“The rainy season is here again and with the way refuse is being disposed, the whole metropolis will be messy once there is downpour.

“Lagosians are supposed to have imbibed the culture of bagging their refuse and dropping them at designated places.

“However, this has not been the case and it is a pity refuse has returned everywhere on Lagos streets, unfortunately it will all end up in water channels,’’ he said.

Ekoko said that people should go back to bagging their refuse properly and ensuring they drop it neatly where the refuse trucks would pick them up.

According to him, by this way, many diseases caused by dirty environment will be avoided.

Ekoko also said that once the refuse get to the water bodies, it would contaminate it and people using untreated borehole water would be at risk of water borne diseases. (NAN)
