Tricycle operator gets 5 months imprisonment for causing road obstruction

Imprisonment

Abuja,  April 4, 2018 (NAN) A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, sentenced a tricycle operator, Christopher Oshel, to five months imprisonment for causing obstruction on a high way.

The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine.

Sadiq, who said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others, advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, but proceed to learn and understand the rules of the Road Traffic Act.

Oshel, who resides at Karmo Village, was convicted on a two-count charge of causing obstruction on public highway, riding without National Driving License/Learner permit and failure to produce tricycle particulars on demand.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge, urged the court to temper justice with mercy and promised to be of good conduct and ensured that the necessary particulars were collected.

The Prosecutor, Zannan Dalhatu, had told the court that the convict was arrested by a traffic warden at the Karmo Market Junction on March 29.

Dalhatu said that the convict obstructed the free flow of traffic at the market and when he was arrested, he could not produce his drivers’ license and particulars of the tricycle.

The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under Sections 39 and 45 of the Road Traffic Act. (NAN)
