Court remands 2 men in Police custody over cell phone theft

Lagos, April 3, 2018 (NAN) An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Tuesday ordered two middle-aged men to be remanded in Police custody after pleading guilty to theft of a cell phone.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. Kusanu, said that the accused should be kept in police custody until April 9 for presentation of facts and sentencing upon their pleas of guilty.

Two men, Bashiru Ahmed, 26; and Isaac John, 25; pleaded guilty to the theft of a N40, 000 mobile phone while in the dock.

Ahmed and John of no fixed address had appeared before the court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Clara Olagbayi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 25 at 8.00 p.m. at Ademuyiwa Bus Stop, on Apapa Road, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Olagbayi said that the accused had snatched a Techno phone valued at N40, 000 from the complainant, Bukola Oladapo, while she was making a call.

According to her, the offences contravened Sections 287 and 413 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes seven years jail term, while 413 also stipulates seven years imprisonment for offenders upon conviction. (NAN)
