Karu (Nasarawa State), March 28,2018 (NAN) Alhaji Hashimu Jibrin, a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (APC-Karu/Gitata), has advised his constituents to desist from  dumping refuse in waterways to prevent health hazards and flooding.

Jibrin gave the advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Karu on Wednesday.

He said that the advice was in view of the health hazards on  residents caused by indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially during the rainy season.

“The residents are advised to ensure environmental cleanliness by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water channels in the interest of the health of the people and for the general well being of the people of the area.

“The Nasarawa State Government under Gov.Tanko Al-Makura administration is doing its best in keeping the environment clean; it is also the responsibility of everybody to complement government’s efforts by keeping his or her environment clean.

“It is often said that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation; it is on this note that the government and stakeholders are always advising the people on the need to maintain personal and environmental hygiene in the state.

“As the rainy season has started, I want to use this medium to appeal to my constituents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in gutters considering its health implication on human lives.

“The indiscriminate dumping of refuse is not good for the health of the people, hence the need for my constituents to keep the environment clean,” he said.

Jibrin, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Land and Survey, added that dumping of refuse in gutters, markets and other places indiscriminately could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which could lead to the spread of communicable diseases including Malaria.

“Residents are advised to keep their dustbins tightly covered at all times as debris from uncovered dustbins goes straight into homes and unhygienic practices are dangerous to human health,” he stressed.

He assured his constituents of an effective and robust representation in the assembly, while soliciting for more support to enable him succeed in all his endeavours.

The lawmaker restated his commitment toward people’s oriented projects in his constituency to improve the standard of living of the people.

He further urged the people of the state to live in peace with one another, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political differences. (NAN)
