Teenage shop assistant absconds with employer’s N200,000

Ikeja, March 23, 2018 (NAN) An 18-year-old shop assistant, Teslim Ogunwale, who allegedly absconded with his employer’s N200,000, was on Friday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Ogunwale, who resides at Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.
Sgt. Dada Wasiu, the Police Prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in February this year at Fagba area of Lagos.
Wasiu said the accused, who worked as a sales boy at the provisions’ shop of the complainant, Mr Alex Imina, failed to remit N200, 000 being proceeds from sales.
“The accused who was employed in October 2017 sold some cartons of biscuits and absconded with the money.
“Efforts made by the complainant to get his money were unsuccessful as the accused refused to pick his calls.
“He was later arrested and handed over to the police,” he said.
The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates seven years imprisonment for clerks stealing from employers.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs A.K. Dosumu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Dosumu said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until April 12. (NAN)
