Adamawa to partner National Library of Nigeria to boost library

Yola, March 14, 2018 (NAN) The Adamawa Government on Wednesday, said it would partner with the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) to enable libraries in the state meet international standard.

The Governor of the state, Mohammed Bindow, made the promise at the two-day sensitisation workshop on Legal Deposit, International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) in Yola.

Bindow, who was represented by his Deputy, Martins Babale, also said the state government would continue to support the national library to boost intellectual capacity of Nigerians.

The governor, however, expressed concern over the attitude of some youths whom he noted had declined tremendously in the use of library due to the advent of social media.

Earlier, Prof. Lanre Aina, National Librarian, said that the workshop became to imperative because of the need for people to comply with the laws establishing NLN.

He said the NLN Act stipulates that all publications emanating from Nigeria must comply with International Standards through the issuance of International Standard Book Number (ISBN).

The national librarian also said the workshop was also aimed at ensuring that the public properly understand the the concept behind the legal deposit obligation by publishers and authors.

He expressed optimism that the workshop would also create awareness on the operations in the national library in line with best global practices.

Aina commended the governor for his collaboration with the NLN.
