Woman, 58, docked for alleged N26m fraud

Abuja, March 1,2018(NAN) The Police on Thursday arraigned a 58-year-old woman, Mrs Frances Bekey, in an FCT High Court, Apo, for alleged N26million fraud.
The defendant is facing a two-count charge, bordering on fraud and dishonestly collecting original copy of Certificate of Occupancy from the complainant, Mr Chris Adighije.
The prosecutor, Mr Samuel Mallum, alleged that the defendant, who lives at Bekey, Plot 1121 Obafemi Awolowo Way, Utako, Abuja defrauded Adighije.
Mallum told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec. 2, 2016.
He said that the defendant fraudulently issued three Fidelity Bank dud cheques to the tune of N26 million to Adighije.
Mallum alleged that the defendant used original Certificate of Occupancy of her house, situated at Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, as collateral on a N15million loan, which accrued interest remained unpaid.
The prosecutor said that the defendant defaulted in the repayment of the accrued N27 million interest on the loan, which the complainant had to offset.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 1 of Dishonest Cheque Act 2010, and Section 322 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
Justice Peter Kekemeke granted the defendant bail in the sum of N30miilion and two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case until May 2, for hearing. (NAN)
