Lagos, Feb. 26, 2018 (NAN) Sports has the potential to inculcate tolerance, pragmatism, tact and discipline which would help participants to become successful, practical and skill-oriented, a director has said.

“Activities in sports also promote friendship, unity and team spirit which have a way of solving physical and health problems, Mrs Tina Eyaru, Director, Technology and Science Department, Federal Ministry of Sports, said in Lagos.

Eyaru spoke at the 47th Inter-house Sports Competition of the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos, on Saturday.

“That is why we encourage students to use sports as a tool for uniting our diverse and cultural differences and move our country forward.

“We should also get engaged in sports and physical exercises on regular basis not only in schools but also at family and society levels,’’ she advised.

“I want to also impress on you, the importance of doing things one at a time. You must learn how to divide any assignment you are given into portions.

“Work on a portion at a time and be consistent; in no time, a seeming enormous task will be completed within a short time.

“Be time conscious, and manage your time well,” Eyaru advised.

Alhaji Mohammed Karage, Director of Basic and Secondary Education in the ministry, also said that engaging in sports would impact positively on health.

According to him, health must be adequately enhanced through physical activities.

“Over the years, sports competitions have been a potent tool for discovery and grooming of talents.

“Our ministry has not failed in sports delivery through FEDCOL Games,’’ Karage said.

Earlier, the Acting Principal of the college, Mrs Jane Nwanah, expressed the hope of discovery of new talents who would represent Nigeria locally and globally.

According to her, students are being trained to excel in classrooms and on the field of play.

“Success is not final and failure is not fatal; what matters is the courage to forge ahead,’’ she said.

Nwanah appealed to the Federal Government to assist the college with modern equipment in its workshops to replace obsolete ones.

The immediate past Principal of the college, Rev. Chris Ugorji, advised the students to keep the torch of unity of the country burning, on the field of play and in their hearts. (NAN)
