Port Harcourt, Feb. 23, 2018(NAN) Dr Samuel Kalagbor, the Rector, Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Port Harcourt, has cautioned academic staff of the institution against acts capable of lowering academic standards.

Kalagbor said this while speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) in Port Harcourt on Friday.

He said that the polytechnic had evolved measures aimed at checking lecturers’ involvement in corrupt and other immoral acts that would not support academic growth.

According to Kalagbor, academic staff members must comport themselves in ways that will make them ”positive role models” to the students.

The rector said that although intimidation and harassment of students by teachers were alien to the institution, they would never be tolerated, if they reared their heads.

“Nothing lowers academic standards more than when lecturers stop encouraging hard work; standards fall the moment the students are aware of shortcuts to earning marks.

“We have sounded it very clearly that we are against such practices. Our check mechanisms are very much alive too.’’

The rector further said that students had unhindered access to his office.

“They are free to make complaints when necessary,’’ Kalagbor said. (NAN)
