Zaria (Kaduna State), Feb. 14, 2014 (NAN) The Emir of Zazzau, Dr Shehu Idris, on Wednesday appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide voter registration centre in all wards across Kaduna State to facilitate registration of eligible voters
The emir made the appeal when he received members of Zaria branch of the Correspondents Chapel, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Zaria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit was to felicitate with the Emir who recently celebrated 43 years on the throne.
The Emir, who spoke through Dokajin Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Garba, said the success of any election lies on the ability electorate to obtain voters card, adding that current arrangement would deny Nigerians opportunity to register.
“Zaria Local Government for instance has only one designated registration centre.
“You can imagine somebody from Wucicciri, Kwaba and Dutsen Abba to come to Danmagaji just to register, how much will he spend on transport?
“Therefore, we are appealing to INEC to see reason for additional registration centres in all the ward of not only Zaria but across the state, ” he pleaded.
The Emir urged his subjects and other Nigerians to take advantage of the ongoing registration to obtain their voter card, so as to exercise their franchise.
“Remember, your voter card is your weapon, it is the only means to be used to elect credible leaders of choice. It is also the only weapon to change bad or unwanted leaders.”
The Emir urged journalists to always abide by the ethics of the profession, and always put the nation first above all other interests.
Earlier, Acting Chairman of the chapel, Mohammed Bello-Habib said the visit was to felicitate with the emir on his 43rd anniversary and pledged the chapel’s support in projecting the image of the emirate.
He described the emir as a father to all, who has worked tirelessly in promoting peace and national integration.(NAN)
