Abuja, Feb. 9, 2018 (NAN) Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, Chairman, Secondary Education Board (SEB), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says the Board is committed to improving secondary education in the area.
Mohammed told newsmen on Friday in Abuja that the board would leave education standard in the territory better than it met it, adding that challenges confronting the sector would not deter the board from its vision.
According to him, it will be an aberration for staff and members of the Board to continue to live and operate with archaic ideas which are not in conformity with modern trend.
He said as the nation’s capital, the expected performance of the Board could not be anything less than the best.
Mohammed, who decried the fallen standard of education in the country, said everyone was guilty for the rot in the sector, including the students.
He, however, said that with the cooperation and understanding of the Board’s management, he would ensure that right things were done and within the ambit of the law.
The chairman described as unpleasant, the performance of some secondary schools in FCT, adding that acts of corruption would not be tolerated.
Earlier, the Acting Director of SEB, Mrs Nanre Emeje, said that lack of inspection vehicles had limited the Board from satisfactorily inspecting and monitoring 62 senior secondary schools in the territory.
Other challenges, she said, were shortage of manpower, office accommodation and congestion in most of the schools.
According to Emeje, the congestion was due to the influx of people on daily basis and more patronage of public schools by parents who hitherto had their wards in private schools.
She said that the Board was on the verge of proposing 10 new schools to be built by FCT administration.
Emeje said that there was an urgent need to decongest the soaring demand for public education in the territory which saw total number of enrolment rose to 64,000 in 2017. (NAN)
