Warri (Delta), Feb. 9, 2018 (NAN) Mr Paul Akporowho, Vice Chairman, Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), Delta Chapter, has blamed poor execution of projects in the country on non-involvement of professionals in the private sector.
Akporowho told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Warri, that professionals in the private sector were more committed to achieving good result than those in the public sector.
“Professionals in the private sector are driven by merit and excellence unlike those in the public sector,’’ he said.
Akporowho, who is also the National Secretary, Nigerian Environmental Society, said that many projects, especially roads and drains, failed the test of time because they were not properly executed.
According to him, the private sector will rather key on excellence than doing shady things that will jeopardise their reputations; they will not compromise standard.
“A lot of projects have failed in the country because of government’s non-involvement of those in the private sector.
“The private sector you and I know is driven by merit and excellence.
“You cannot remain in business if you don’t consider merit in your work, so to achieve a result-oriented project, you need the private sector.
“For instance in Warri metropolis, most of the roads hardly last for three months before they collapse and it has been so since the past administrations.
“Also, the failure of the drainage system in the state is a clear manifestation of the total collapse of ethics and merits in the award of contracts,’’ he said.
Akporowho urged government at all levels to blend professionals in the public service with those in private sector in the award, monitoring and execution of projects, to achieve optimal results. (NAN)
